Splitweet as a Desktop app for Mac, Linux or Windows

223251-128605.jpgIf you are a Mac user, you can run Splitweet as an application using Fluid.app. It won't take you more than 2 minutes to configure it, and you'll always have your tweets at hand. With Fluid you can have any website configured as an independent application.

Taskbar

To make it work you only need to download Fluid.app, run it and fill the form as shown in the picture:

Fluid.app

If you use a different language other than english, put the subdomain in the address for a quicker access. For instance, http://es.splitweet.com if you want Splitweet in Spanish. You can use our ninja as the icon to make it look better (Save this image in your desktop):

And that's all!

If you are a Windows user or Linux user:

There are 2 options: You can do the same using Chrome (win only), but I haven't tested it yet. As a second option, a Splitweet user, Soroush, has reported that Mozilla Prism is doing the same, you can read that in his blog. Download and share your experience to others!

Pieces of advice for a better Splitweet experience

Here I leave some quick tips that might help you increase your experience with Splitweet. We don't have a manual detailing every aspect of the application (who would read it!) but a quick post has the same effect, here it goes:

Hide your twitter accounts

If you click on the "What are you doing" header you'll hide your accounts selectors, so you have more space for reading. It will remain closed until you click on a button that involves writing or you click the header again.

Hide accounts

Change the preferences by default

You can set some preferences in the "profile" link that you might find useful. E.g: Opening links in new tabs, show Twitter user/full names... have a look. What there is by default it might not be the best choice for your needs.

Preferences

Read only interesting Tweets

Show to yourself only what you CAN read. Hide your corporative accounts and add their names in the brands' mentions: you'll stay tuned on what's going on without having to read all the updates these accounts are generating... You can always re-add a hidden account by clicking on the link and read from time to time these accounts.

In my case: Despite I have several accounts I only read 3 of them on a daily basis, it is impossible to me to read all the people I follow through splitweet or other big accounts, but I am well aware of what happens through the brands' mentions. Here's a sample:

Filtering

You don't need a desktop client

Ok, maybe yo do :P but by using Splitweet your Twitter Quota is never reached, because we do the request for you and we don't have any limit (but you do from your machine). Splitweet will look for new tweets and warn you in each account every 90 seconds, and that costs you nothing. Using TwitterFox for instance you can receive updates every 3 minutes the sooner. I have Splitweet opened in a tab all day long, and it really works for me :)

Splitweet has memory

Caution, Splitweet remembers your selected accounts. Do not tweet on the wrong account!

You move!

If you have used Splitweet for a while, sure you can help other users by sharing your experienece through the comments!

Top 15 Features requested by Splitweet users

jueves, 29 de enero del 2009 a las 21:54

The Splitweet support email receives every day a lot of comments, suggestions, good words (and bad ones) from registered and not yet registered users. From people who don't know how to browse the page to experts who suggest brilliant ideas.

What I want to show here is the list of the most (not necessarily the nicer) requested features that I've found in the inbox several times, so users say...

I want...

  1. To filter following tweets by account
  2. A desktop application like Tweetdeck
  3. A translation in my speaking language
  4. An application for my iPhone
  5. An application for Blackberry (the word Storm was heard a lot)
  6. TinyURL, is.gd, xortr.com and similar link integration
  7. Exclude my own tweets from the brands' mentions
  8. To pick the color associated to each account
  9. An application for Windows Mobile
  10. Search box for users
  11. To see new following users
  12. To schedule tweets
  13. To show nested conversations (and other similar stuff)
  14. A Firefox sidebar
  15. To post via SMS

We won't do everything on the list, at least in short. I want to remark that we are not a company and that we do all this in our spare time, so the development is slow. And, NO we can't promise you a specific date. We do our best, and we are also open to anyone who might help us, specially in the Adobe AIR development, firefox plugin development and translations. The first 3 points in the list are started :)

We also did a lot of stuff based on this kind of comments, just to put ten:

  1. Enable/disable sound preference
  2. Show complete name or username preference
  3. Disable autoupdates preference
  4. Redesign of the site
  5. Retweet messages
  6. Reply messages
  7. Check the last used account so you can post several times using the same selection
  8. Stop reloading page if there are new tweets and you are writing something
  9. Add to favorites and the favorites page
  10. Warn the user by javascript if no account is selected

And of course Splitweet is now in 11 languages...

Help us to choose the best retweet icon

Retweet at Splitweet

Yesterday we published our last update, including the new 'retweet' icon. This icon allows you to quote other people tweets, without having to write their @name and copy/paste the content of the tweet.

Retweet at Splitweet

It has been a long awaited feature, asked for many of our users due to the increasing popularity of the 'retweet' practice.

At this moment it isn't supported natively by Twitter, so it doesn't exist an standard way of retweeting (like the @name for replies for instance). Most of people use the 'RT' or 'Retweet' convention, and in fact our first intention was to use 'RT' too, but then we heard about some alternatives that sounded interesting: the use of one single Unicode symbol to identify the retweets. Since we're using a communication system with one main limitation -140 characters-, it seems that makes sense to try to find the shorter way for all this stuff.

Following these recommendations we implemented the Unicode symbol for recycle: ♺. It represents perfectly what retweet means and is only 1-char long. The problem: it doesn't work under some circumstances: Windows or iPhone, for instance. Triste

So... we have to find an alternative and need your help to choose the better one. Would you help us? We start: our vote is for » , other Unicode symbol, visible for major part of OSs.

Yes, we can

Usage of splitweet by languages

viernes, 12 de diciembre del 2008 a las 11:42

Splitweet is online since end-november. These are the top languages used by Splitweet users in one month (about 12.000 visits)

  1. English 63,91%
  2. Spanish 16,71%
  3. Portuguese 4,34%
  4. German 3,72%
  5. French 2,93%
  6. Japanese 1,53%
  7. Catalan 1,34%
  8. Dutch 1,00%
  9. Chinese 0,94%
  10. Italian 0,80%
  11. Hungarian 0,35%
  12. Turkish 0,23%
  13. Korean 0,12%
  14. Polish 0,12%
  15. Swedish 0,12%
  16. Other 1,84%

In bold what we already have. Splitweet is now in 6 languages, and 2 more coming shortly (Portuguese and Italian), although it seems that the natural progression would be the Japanese version... but we still haven't found a translator!

If you are interested in localizating Splitweet to your language, please send an email to translators AT splitweet.com

Happy local-splitweeting!!
